Irradiation is a type of sterilization that uses radiation for eliminating bacteria and pathogens. Irradiation of labware for decontamination is classified in Class 37 by analogy to "irradiation of medical instruments" in the Nice Alphabetical List in Class 37. Food irradiation is classified in Class 40 because it is a type of food preservation and processing activity, and "food and drink preservation" is in the Nice Class 40 Heading.
