Although the wording "Treatment of materials" appears in the Nice Class 40 Heading, the term "Treatment of materials" is indefinite under current U.S. ID policy. The description must indicate the type of material being treated or the means of treatment. This fill-in-the-blank entry permits users to indicate both the type of material and the means of treatment. The treatment services classified in Class 40 involve transformation of the materials by mechanical or chemical means, per the Nice Class 40 Heading, not simply application of protective coatings to the surface of materials, for example, which would be classified in Class 37.
